Those of you that know me are unfortunately aware that I'm somewhat of a geek about technological things. This means that I can get unduly fascinated about things like EveryBlock. I had been meaning to write about this site a few weeks ago when it was sent to me by my Chief of Staff, whose brother is a Microsoft beta-tester. I didn't, but a recent Tribune article jogged my inclination to do so now.The site essentially aggregates news, crime reports and other miscellanea sorted by city, neighborhood or zip code. While still in its infancy, it currently only covers Chicago, New York and San Francisco, it is a very interesting idea that can help people be more aware of what's going on in their neighborhood, or to look into someplace that they're thinking about moving to or visiting. Check it out.

John - Kudos to you for sponsoring HB 4180. That student prayer / moment of silence is a completely bad idea.
As a parent it outrages me to think that any of my kids' time would be wasted on a moment of silence. My daughter's kindergarten class curriculum is so packed that the teacher only takes them out for recess on Fridays "when we're done with everything else." Non-parents may think that it's a joke but with NCLB and all the other achievement benchmarks, students don't have time to waste. 2 minutes a day equals 40 minutes of learning every month that could be wasted on silence.
I know you'll catch a lot of flack for pushing your version, but I hope you pass it.

Thanks PF. I'm still surprised that the underlying law passed in the first place. And I have to say that passage of this commonsense amendment is far from a sure thing. But we'll find out soon enough.
